Vertical Rice Mills in Japan
Various types of rice mill are used in rice growing areas around the world. They differ according to the production method of rice, social environment, historical progress, technical level, and varieties of rice in individual countries.
The types of machine also change gradually due to technical development, improved rice varieties etc.
Here, rice mills divided into four major types are outlined and their operating methods are described.
This rice mill was produced at the end of nineteenth century in the U.S.A. Its distribution grew in parallel to rice cultivation. It was distributed in Europe and then in Asia and Africa. The machine was produced locally.
Husking and polishing are performed at the same time. With only a single pass through the machine, the paddy is finished as milled rice. This rice huller polisher has long been used in small rice mills in Southeast Asia and Africa.
This type of rice mill is said to be the prototype of horizontal, friction mill.
A steel cylinder with projections and huller blade induce a friction force and a scraping effect for husking and polishing rice. The lower semicircle screen of the milling chamber is made of perforated sheet metal.
Rice husks and rice brans are discharged from these holes.
