Cultivation Areas and Rice Yields

The largest portion of cultivation areas in the world is occupied by wheat, followed by rice and maize. However, the largest yield per unit area is occupied by maize, followed by rice and wheat. And the largest production is occupied by wheat with the largest cultivation area followed by rice and maize. (Table 1)
However, rice has the largest edible yield and calories. (Table 2)

Population Supporting Ability of Rice

Supposing a person requires 2,400 Cal and 60 g of protein a day, obtained only from cereals, the number of persons who can be supported by each type of cereal is given in Table 3. According to this table, the largest number of persons who can be supported calorie-wise per unit area is held by rice, followed by maize and wheat. Protein-wise, wheat comes first, followed by rice and maize, but there is not much difference between them.

Therefore, rice can be regarded as an excellent food from the viewpoint of both calories and as a protein source.
