Rice Production and Consumption in Major Countries

Rice-producing countries ranked by volume are China, India and Indonesia, with Japan occupying eleventh position.(in 2019) High levels of rice production are found in Brazil, South America and in the U.S.A. outside Asian countries. In Asian countries, the ranking of the production almost corresponds to the area cultivated Japan, South Korea and North Korea, however, enjoy higher production due to higher yields per unit area.
Outside Asia, Egypt and the U.S.A. have high yields. In Egypt and California, fine weather during the summer rice growing period contributes significantly to yields.

Per Capita Rice Consumption

Rice consumption of countries per head depends on eating habits in each country. If the production of a country is simply divided by its population, Asian countries generally have higher consumption per head, as indicated in Table 4. Other areas with high rice consumption are Guyana, South America, Liberia, Madagascar and Sierra Leone in Africa. Until about 50 years ago, Japan’s consumption was approximately 130 kg per head a year, however, consumption has decreased to 56 kg now.

Rice Trade

Exports of rice during the period of 1984 ? 1986 worldwide were about 12 million tons, which is not reach of even 4% of the total global production (In 1991 it reached 12.6 million tons, which corresponds to 3.5% of total production). The countries with higher export are Thailand, China and Myanmar, while countries such as the U.S.A. and Pakistan with less consumption tend to treat rice as a cash crop.
